On her visit on 27th March 2010, President Mary McAleese stated, ‘having travelled the world for the last 12 years, I am not easily astonished, but coming here today to a small rural community, I was truly astonished by the scale of the achievements here… it is a huge credit to all involved.’

Working closely with the community from an early stage in this project to analyse needs, costs and assist with funding applications McGurk Architects were able to develop the brief whilst testing various feasibility issues. The resultant building features a 60 x 35 m indoor arena, with a translucent custom engineered fabric superstructure made by RUBB Buildings in Newcastle, England. This is anchored to the ground by 5 m high gable and 2.5 m longitudinal sidewalls of shuttered reinforced concrete. This structural ballast functions as a rebound wall for internal sporting activities, such as Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, and soccer.
