McGurk Architects recently completed this rear and side extension to a dwelling in County Antrim. The existing kitchen was small and dark; the client’s brief was to create a new open plan kitchen, living and dining room for modern family living which would take advantage of natural light and existing views to the rear of the property, whilst also accommodating a new utility room.
The solution was to demolish the existing sun room and provide a new 40sqm extension to the existing kitchen, creating a new open plan ‘L’ shaped space which would form the nucleus of the family home.
The extension provides a link to the garage (previously detached) which does two things;
– provides a new space for a generous utility room and;
– closes off the rear garden to form a courtyard space; a safe and secure area for the children to play, and a sun trap for lazy summer afternoon barbecues.
New bi-fold doors to the dining area provide a connection to this rear courtyard and allow the interior space to become an extension of the courtyard.
